Now in a Minute Theatre will be campaigning for our audiences’ right to social inclusion by promoting accessibility to London’s local community and youth centres. These places are vital for many groups to help build relationships in their local community and prevent isolation. However without access, opportunity and understanding it’s

The human soul doesn’t want to be advised or fixed or saved. It simply wants to be seen and heard exactly as it is.

Facility accessibility

The charity, Changing Places, say that '1/4 of a million people who cannot use standard accessible toilets. This includes people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, as well as older people.' In order for everyone to be accepted fully into society we need to treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve. This means providing rooms with changing benches, hoists and enough space for carers. Without this, members of our communities are put at risk, and families are forced to risk their own health and safety by changing their loved one on a toilet floor. 'This is dangerous, unhygienic and undignified.'

Leisure activities

A new survey by Mencap Uk shows '1 in 3 18-35 year olds with a learning disability are stuck at home on a Saturday and unable to take part in leisure activities, due to public attitudes to learning disability.' Everyone needs variation but unfortunately many profoundly disabled people are living restricted lives. Our company promotes businesses that offer inclusive activities for a variety of access needs.

Bring Signing to the mainstream

Makaton is used by lots of people with communication and learning difficulties. This brilliant way of communicating has been adapted for use in over 50 countries. Currently 100,000 children and adults use Makaton symbols and signs. As part of our Community Campaign, we at Now in a Minute theatre are hoping to take this form of communication further into the verbal community. We would love to introduce signing those who have never experienced it before. Let’s #sendsomelove!
